Jesus as the true and only sacrifice of God

*This is the outline of my talk at Fri's international cafe.*

"A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all; he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken." - Psalm 34:19-20 (NIV)

"Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken," and, as another scripture says, "They will look on the one they have pierced."" - John 19:31-37 (NIV)

1. The Passover Lamb is without blemish or defect.

"It must be eaten inside one house; take none of the meat outside the house. Do not break any of the bones." - Exodus 12:46 (NIV)

"They must not leave any of it till morning or break any of its bones. When they celebrate the Passover, they must follow all the regulations." - Numbers 9:12 (NIV)

2. Jesus is our Passover Lamb, a lamb without blemish or defect.

"Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast - as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed." - 1 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV)

"Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear. For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect." - 1 Peter 1:17-19 (NIV)

3. God will provide.

In Genesis 22, God commands Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac as a burnt offering (to test Abraham), but later commands Abraham to stop and provides a ram to be used instead.

"Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together." - Genesis 22:6-8 (NIV)

In Genesis 22, God provides a ram to be sacrificed as a substitute for Abraham's son Isaac. In the fullness of time, God provides His own Son, Jesus Christ, to be sacrificed as a substitute for all of us.

4. Jesus is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

"The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!"" - John 1:29 (NIV)

5. Jesus can take away the sin of the world because He is a righteous man, a lamb without blemish or defect.

"A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all; he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken." - Psalm 34:19-20 (NIV)

6. Jesus takes away the sin of the world by dying for our sins.

"Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth." - Isaiah 53:4-7 (NIV)

""He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth." When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls." - 1 Peter 2:22-25 (NIV)

"For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God." - 1 Peter 3:18 (NIV)

7. Jesus' righteousness covers all who enter into a relationship with Him.

"But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished - he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus." - Romans 3:21-26 (NIV)

羊 - Lamb

我 - Me

義(义) - Lamb covers me = Righteousness
