The law was given to mark Israel as God's people. It is important to remember how it did this: it took the various human institutions of the time, and transformed them so that Israel would reflect the character of her God. Thus Israel could be a nation like the nations around her, but everything about her would show that her God was not like their gods.
All this was, says Paul, temporary: Israel needed this religious framework only until both she and the other nations could be transformed through her Messiah.
